The Stuart Florida Regatta – A podium for Mathieu Daoust
Bert Henderson the master led the way in front of Mike Monahan. In the 6th edition of the Stuart Florida Regatta Bert Henderson and the Steeler GP-777 were triumphant winning the Grand Prix Final. The Brockville Ontario driver fended off Mike Monahan who took second place in the TM Special GP-35. This marked his second win in the Hydroplane Racing Leagues 2017 season. This was also Henderson’s second consecutive win at the Stuart Causeway having won there last year. Mathieu Daoust came in third to complete the podium with his GP-9 The Dog. The Valleyfield driver profited from a penalty given to Brandon Kennedy to take third place. Marty Wolfe GP-93, Tommy Thompson GP-525, and Martin Rochon GP-773 followed in that order. Kennedy who started on the second line came from behind to third place but was given a penalty for destroying a buoy.
The final was a very exciting race from beginning to end and Bert Henderson had no room for error, as the veteran Mike Monahan was right in his mirror throughout the race. Monahan was only 77 one hundredths of a second behind Henderson at the end of the four laps. The Steelers time was 2 minutes 17 seconds and 8 one hundreds compared to 2:17, 85 for the TM Special and 2:19,03 for The Dog.
Martin Rochon qualified the RTX Racing GP-773 for the final by winning the GP consolation race. Robin Demers took over for Mario Blain in the GP- 757 Canada Boy because of Mario’s back pains and took second place in qualification 3C in his first start in the Grand Prix class.
Donny Allen a H-350 driver made his debut driving the GP-93 Renegade for Marty Wolfe who was ill Saturday. Allen stunned everyone in the grandstands by bringing the 2016 winning boat to a first and second place finish.
In GP qualifying heats we saw these winners: Bert Henderson (1A, 2A, 3A), Mike Monahan (2B, 3C), Mathieu Daoust (1C), Tommy Thompson (2C), and Martin Rochon (3B) . In other classes on the schedule that were not under HRL jurisdiction we saw the following winners: Karson Kennedy (2.5L), Donny Allen (5L/H-350), et Tom Pakradooni (Jersey Speed Skiff).
All the HRL competitors in the 2.5L, Formula 2500, H-350 and Grand Prix classes will be back in action in Gananoque Ontario June 3rd and 4th.
