The Hydroplane Racing League modernizes class naming for the 2026 season

In an effort to improve clarity, competitive alignment, and the overall structure of its championship, the Hydroplane Racing League (HRL) announces an official update to the names of two racing classes, effective for the 2026 season.

As the designations S-2.5 litre and Formula 2500-F no longer accurately reflect current engine performance, HRL is introducing a new naming structure better aligned with driver development and championship progression.

Two classes, one common platform

Both classes feature the same type of boats, with specific technical subtleties. The updated structure places greater emphasis on driver experience, progression, and classification rather than numerical engine references.

Introduction of Formula R

The S-2.5 litre class is now officially renamed Formula R, with “R” representing Recruit, Rookie, and Development. This class is designed to support and structure the progression of emerging drivers.

A key technical element accompanies this change:

In Formula R, an engine speed limiter will now be implemented through programming for Honda engines, with a lower RPM limit than in the Formula F class. This measure is intended to help less experienced drivers gradually adapt to racing conditions, while promoting more balanced competitive conditions for teams using Ford engines.

Formula F

Formula 2500-F is now renamed simply Formula F.
There are no changes to the technical or sporting regulations for this class; only the name has been updated.

Driver classification and promotion

Each season, the HRL Board of Directors will determine the number of boats assigned to Formula R and Formula F based on participation levels and driver experience. Any non-HRL member boat will automatically be classified in Formula F.

Promotion criteria are as follows:

  • A driver will be automatically promoted to Formula F for the following season if they win one championship and have three years of driving experience, or if they win two championships.
  • In Formula F, any driver who wins a final is guaranteed placement in that class for the following season.
  • All other cases will be reviewed and determined by the HRL Board of Directors.

Through this update, HRL reinforces its commitment to a clear, fair, and progressive competitive structure that supports driver development while maintaining a high level of competition.
