- – 20 March 2023
The hydroplane racing community eagerly awaits the arrival of the 11th boat in the 2.5 litre class – the TM Special S-35. This cutting-edge hydroplane will be driven by the promising brother duo, Kyle (24) and Austin (22) Hayes, who will share the driving responsibilities throughout the Hydroplane Racing League (HRL) season.
As part of a family legacy in hydroplane racing, the brothers have been immersed in the sport since their early childhood. Now in their fourth generation, the family celebrates their 53rd year on the water. Kyle will primarily be behind the wheel for the Canadian sites, while Austin will take on other locations. Both young racers will benefit from the guidance and support of their accomplished family members, including their brother Bobby Kennedy and cousin Brandon Kennedy, both renowned drivers of the GP-35.
An exciting addition to the racing circuit
The TM Special S-35, owned by Ronnie and Sandy Thompson, is an exciting addition to the racing circuit, and the brothers are proud and honored to be part of a new generation of drivers. The Thompson and Kennedy families have come together in a true family affair, with the shared goal of maintaining their legacy in the hydroplane racing world. The brothers are particularly grateful to Ronnie and Sandy for giving them this amazing opportunity.
The hull, a Henderson-built, was initially crafted for the esteemed boat racer Kent Henderson. He skillfully drove it for half a season before selling the vessel to Sam Horner. The boat, adorned with the iconic S-88 – Playing Again name, soon found a new captain in Bobby Kennedy. Bobby’s innate talent and determination behind the wheel of this remarkable craft led him to claim numerous titles, including the prestigious Triple Crown in Cambridge, Maryland in 2010.
Fans and fellow racers can catch the debut of the TM Special S-35 and the hopeful brother duo at the first race of the HRL season in Cambridge. With the support and expertise of their family, Kyle and Austin are set to make a splash in the world of hydroplane racing.
