Tom Thompson is the driver of the hydroplane he co-owns with the English family in the prestigious team Fat Chance. The history behind the name does not weigh on him; it is in fact a source of pride and motivation. “I feel lucky to be part of the rich history of the Fat Chance Racing Team, he mentions. I am driving the only wooden Grand Prix and the only boat in the fleet built by Jon Staudacher.”
The American’s passion for the sport is undeniable, as 2018 will mark his 35rd year of racing. It all started in the Jersey Speed Skiff class, as he was teaming up with his father, Tommy Thompson. They formed a very successful team, winning, among many other things, four consecutive championships in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield aboard The Gambler.
Since then, he has raced in every single inboard class and won countless National Championships. But a true champion is one that has earned the respect of his fellow competitors. He is highly regarded for his sportsmanship and knowledge of the sport. His team would tell you that he is also very meticulous, checking every bolt, fitting and critical area of the hydroplane before each race. Tom Thompson is a veteran who has already left his mark on the boat racing world.
What he likes about the sport is the competition, but the most important part isthe friendship that are made through the years.
