Thomas Huganir, better known under his alias Johnny Dooche, is a funny man and it translates in his hydroplane racing career. For instance, when asked about the Busted Prop Racing, the Formula 2500 boat he will be co-driving with Steve Armstrong, he keeps an aura of mystery around it: “When Bert Henderson made it, he added a couple of secret modifications that make it handle just a little better. I’d tell you what they are, but I’d have to kill you”, he laughingly adds.
After five years as a driver on the American circuit, this season will be his fourth with the HRL, but stress is no longer a factor for Thomas. In fact, before a race, while his crew readies his hydroplane, he takes a nap or he walks the pits and hassles the other drivers in his heat, questioning if their boats really are ready. “It’s all in good fun!”
Last year, they finished second in the HRL. They missed the championship by 31 points. He are is comments : ”We were strong all year. We had one hiccup in St. Felicien in which we had three DNS (Did not start). We have lost long time crew member Brennan St. Laurent due to work conflictions and we have added Al Robertson to our crew. Without the addition of Al we would have been scrambling to get ready for the season.
For the 2019 season, we would like to keep it simple. Hopefully we can keep up with the rest of these guys, keep out of trouble on the course and stay away from those penalties and buoys.
